Why Black people love Cadillacs

Image
This is Nicholas Dreystadt, and in 1934, the Cadillac car company was on the brink of collapse, especially due to the Great Depression. Nick, a production manager for GM, crashed a corporate meeting called by the president, and made a radical proposal that changing the company's racist / restrictive sales policies to start selling Cadillac to Black people would save the brand.  He wasn't sure why, but Dreystadt noticed that southern Blacks were easily and willing to spend cash for cars. Desperate, the board gave him months to prove his theory. In three years, the company went from being broke to becoming profitable. What Nicholas had not taken specific note of was that the reason Black people had money was because they didn't lose it during the depression like white people did - who lost most of their money when banks went under.  Racist policies restricted Black people from having accounts, so they generally saved their money and oftentimes hid it (often times literally in...

Black Code Breeding

Image
In 1800 there were less than a million slaves in the United States. In 1808 United States banned the import of slaves, effectively stopping the Atlantic slave trade to the US. However, by 1860 the slave population quadrupled to 4 million. The United States was not about to give up its ascension to world power status on the backs of its slave economy, so she, especially in the South, hit on the effective strategy of increasing the number of slaves already within her borders. The primary methodology was by taking Black women and breeding them to produce more slaves. To do this effectively, the family unit would have to be dismantled, so the men especially could not be allowed to be husbands or fathers, and they were especially discouraged from this by having to witness women being raped and sold.  John Tubman, who was actually not a slave, threatened to snitch on his wife Harriet when she confided in him her desire to escape to the North to freedom. I never saw past the irony or unde...

The Wisdom Tooth: A Black Dad short story

Ø¥ِÙ†َّ Ù…ِÙ†ْ Ø£َزْÙˆَجِÙƒُÙ…ْ ÙˆَØ£َÙˆْلـدِÙƒُÙ…ْ عَدُÙˆّاً Ù„َّÙƒُÙ…ْ Verily, among your wives and your children are enemies for you - Quran 64:14 Lemme, tell you a story. First a prologue:   My mom and I had a horrible relationship as I grew up. One day, I made the resentful comment that she "wasn't even my real mother".  I really had no idea how asinine that comment was until my father sat me down and deconstructed my pseudo-intellectual assessment of my mother. I will save the details for my book - but I learned that children are hardly able to give a just estimate of their parents - even into adulthood. It is always up to parents to bear that cross - and bear the witness where kids can't see. ***** Once upon a time: A man went to jail facing charges for crimes that he did not commit, He sadly realized he was fighting a case that everyone but a handful of people thought he was actually guilty of.  That realization made him even more determined to fight and beat...

A Sip Of Islam: Salat

Image
#aSipOfIslam ...the Arabic word we generally use for prayer is " salat ", which at it's root has many different meanings, including "connection" (like how a hinge connects a door and a doorway) and "attention"... Salat therefore implies a connection between man and God whereby both turn attention to each other. Man seeks God's mercy, help, healing, forgiveness, etc. And God listens and responds. In Islam salat is a formal prayer ritual that is to be performed repeatedly and perpetually. Doing as such creates a constant connection between man and God and also instills a constant sense of paying attention to God. One of the worst things that we do, besides not actually praying, is when God gives us the things that we ask for, we become distracted buy those achievements/gifts and we forget to continue our connection and attention. Even though we get what we asked for we must continue to ask for the things that we need and or we must be sure...

Run The Fade - Initiatve 2019

Image
This year, inshaAllah (God willing) I am going to launch an anti-violence initiative based on the jailhouse culture of settling beefs by entering an empty cell and engaging in fisticuff negotiations - as opposed to resorting to using homemade weapons, etc. I'm old school in the belief that in the event that people feel they have to resort to physical confrontation to settle a conflict, that a line be drawn at the use of guns. In my personal opinion, most of today's wannabe  thugs are emotional weenies who are too quick to pull a trigger, further compounding their immature state of mind with life-shattering violence and death. (I blame this on skinny jeans). In jail, the idea alone of walking into a small space one-on-one was enough to make a lot of dudes think twice to avoid behaviors that lead to the thunderdome, and for those who had to get down, they got to walk away, with only a bruised ego if they lost, less thinner skin, and often more respect for the person they ju...

And...Gratitude!

Image
In the pit of my belly, John Wick's dog just got killed - but presently, the dominate feeling up in my heart is freedom - and gratitude. There is an ayat of Quran that quotes Zakariya praying, stating to God that "I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to You" - It is a verse that rings throughout my mind in context to my ordeal. I have questioned a lot during the last 10 months but my faith in Him seeing my thru did not waver. I am first grateful to Him, good times and bad.

Never Home(Part 1): Getting to Xanadu

When an inmate gets out of prison, it is a rebirth - and there are questions they confront in order to start a new life.  One of the most important ones is, "Where am I going to live?"  As a society, we have no idea of the reality that the majority of inmates get out of prison and that they will become our neighbors. I know this - because I was that inmate, and I am now "that neighbor".

BrotherTaj's Ten Things: To Deprogram an Alt-Right Racist Cornball

Image
Racism is an exercise of xenophobia and low self-esteem - negative core values that people reflexively cover up with Confederate flags and misplaced adulation of President Trump/hate for Obama/probable cause traffic stops. What follows is a list of activities that any Alt-Right Racist Cornball can engage in that will rid them of their discriminating schizophrenic prejudices and fears and have them trading in their robes and tiki torches for basic humanity.
